Should I Stay or Should I Go? Selecting Between Touch and Mid-Air Gestures for Large-Display Interaction
نویسندگان
چکیده
Users can interact with large displays in many ways, including touch and mid-air gestures. However, it remains unclear how these ways compare and when users choose one over the other. In a first experiment, we compare touch and mid-air gestures to identify their relative performance for target acquisition. In a second experiment, participants choose freely between touch and mid-air gestures and we artificially require movement to simulate situations where midair is considered beneficial. Results from the first experiment show mid-air to be overall slower than touch depending on the task; in the second experiment, participants mostly chose touch in particular for selecting small targets and they rarely switched between mid-air and touch. Results also show that when faced with an increasing cost of using touch in the form of movement, participants chose mid-air over touch; touch remains as fast as mid-air on average.

Combining touch & mid-air gestures on public displays
This thesis investigates the impact of different factors on public displays that use touch and mid-air gestures. We present a novel application for public displays: MirrorTouch — a game combining touch interaction with mid-air gesturing through depth sense. We studied the impact of these factors through a series field studies. We show that clear affordances are important to communicate both mod...
متن کاملConception et combinaisons de techniques d'interaction mid-air dans les environnements à grands écrans. (Designing and combining mid-air interaction techniques in large display environments)
Large display environments (LDEs) are interactive physical workspaces featuring one or more static large displays as well as rich interaction capabilities, and are meant to visualize and manipulate very large datasets. Research about mid-air interactions in such environments has emerged over the past decade, and a number of interaction techniques are now available for most elementary tasks such...
متن کاملUsing Mid-Air Gestures To Enhance Collaborative Experiences For Disabled Users On Multi-Touch Tables
Multi-touch tables can help facilitate and improve collaborative interactions yet many users with physical disabilities (e.g. wheelchair users) find it extremely difficult to interact with large tables. This paper presents work-in-progress that is exploring the potential to enhance multi-touch table accessibility to enable disabled users to participate more effectively in collaborative interact...
متن کاملPocket Transfers: Interaction Techniques for Transferring Content from Situated Displays to Mobile Devices
We present Pocket Transfers: interaction techniques that allow users to transfer content from situated displays to a personal mobile device while keeping the device in a pocket or bag. Existing content transfer solutions require direct manipulation of the mobile device, making interaction slower and less flexible. Our introduced techniques employ touch, midair gestures, gaze, and a multimodal c...
متن کاملExploring multi-touch gestures for map interaction in mass casualty incidents
In mass casualty incidents a common operation picture, which gives an overview about the current situation is critical information for managing the emergency. In order to support the collaboration between different incident commanders a multi-touch table, placed in the incident command post, is used to present the current operation picture on a map. To place as little additional mental load as ...
